The Envelope That Changed Everything: A 7-Year Journey from Fear to Purpose
Ten days. That's all it took to completely transform my life - but first, let me tell you about the letter that sat untouched on my desk...
Seven years ago tomorrow, I typed out my resignation letter and placed it in an envelope. For ten days, that envelope sat on my desk, a physical reminder of the choice I was about to make.
You see, everything looked perfect on paper – I had a steady paycheck, benefits, a clear career path as an interpreter. But that whisper wouldn't go away. You know that whisper, right? The one that keeps you up at night, that shows up in quiet moments, that refuses to let you settle for 'good enough.'
Growing up as a CODA – a Child of Deaf Adults – I learned early on about bridging worlds. While other kids were playing at recess, I was learning lessons about communication that would shape my entire life. In doctor's offices, at family gatherings, in everyday moments – I was discovering what happens when those bridges don't exist.
Then came the moment that changed everything – the idea of teaching a sign language class. Not just interpreting, but actually leading, teaching, stepping fully into visibility. The very thing I'd been dancing around for years.
That first class? Packed full. And there I was, someone who once shied away from attention, standing in front of a room full of eager students. My hands were shaking as I wrote on the whiteboard, but something magical happened – I watched as one student successfully signed their first full sentence, their face lighting up with pure joy.
Walking in fear doesn't mean living in fear. It means letting fear guide you to opportunities others miss. Because sometimes, our greatest fears lead us to our greatest purpose.
